I think it was around 2000 when I had my first encounter with Weezer, on a gig for Alternative Press. I can't quite remember the magazine's initial concept of the shoot but my good friend and stylist extraordinaire, Houston Sams, had an idea to build a cardboard space ship and space costumes out of tin foil and air conditioner tubing. The band showed up at my house in North Hollywood, with no knowledge of the concept. I was really nervous as I explained it to Rivers, who just looked at me with a blank stare on his face. As I was going on about how awesome it would be, I was also thinking "this dude hates me and my shitty ideas". I could not have been more wrong. The band let us put all this bullshit on them and then got completely into character. Awesome experience!
Over the next decade there were many, many more shoots, changes of band members, marriages, and kids.
The process usually went like this.... we'd have a general concept for the shoot...run it by the band..they'd approve... and it was on.
Maybe the theme of the day was their outfits blended in with their environment, or they were roughians or members of a sports team.
I can't remember a single time that there was any idea they said no to. They are the most unique band I've had the pleasure to have a relationship with. Top Notch for sure.
